Obituary for Joan Louise Hill

Joan L. Hill, age 88, of Alpine Township, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Hill; her parents, Kenneth and Marjorie (King) Usher; parents-in-law, Lloyd and Edith Hill; her sister, Ardis (Fred) Rambow; her sisters-in law, Nancy Usher and Sandy Usher; brother-in-law, Jack Ray; and her great-grandson, Easton Kutzli. Joan is survived by her son, Jim (Arlene) Hill; and her daughters, Judy (Craig) VanDriel and Jackie (Don) Debski; her sisters, Mary Ray and Janet (Alvin) Hill; her brothers, Don Usher and Norman Usher; her grandchildren, Kelly (Kevin) Pitzer, Andrea (Brian) Bastic, Chase (Courtney) VanDriel, Jordan (Brianne Sweers) VanDriel, Sandy (Chris Swaggerty) Hill, Kristy (Jason) Vogel, Jeannie (Ken) Sokolowski, Carrie (Cameron) Kutzli, and Sarah (Nick) Rasch; and her 25 great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Joan graduated from Petoskey High School, Class of 1951. She devoted her life to being a faithful wife, mother, friend, neighbor and homemaker. Joan was also a bit of an activist. During the 1970s, she was part of the Women for the Survival of Agriculture in Michigan (WSAM). In 1972, she—along with three ladies from the Ridge (Sharon Steffens, Pat CoHill and JoAnn Thome)—joined other farm wives in southwest Michigan to picket local apple juice processors for underpaying apple farmers. A force of good to be reckoned with, the efforts of the “Fearsome Foursome,” helped to achieve fair compensation for local farmers. On the sweeter side of life, Joan found great joy in baking: her cinnamon rolls and breads were a treat to all and will forever be missed. Some of Joan’s fondest memories came from family summer camping trips to Brimley State Park, spending time with her family at Lake Michigan and her volunteer work at Saint Matthew Episcopal Church. The family wishes to extend a thank you to the wonderful staff at Edison Christian Health Center and Faith Hospice. A beautiful soul, guided by the light of faith, Joan was a blessing to all who knew her. The family will receive family and friends at Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue, Comstock Park, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Beuschel Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, with Deacon Jerry Roersma officiating. Interment will be held at Alpine Center Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Edison Christian Health Center or Faith Hospice.
