Obituary for Joyce Galligan (Andres)

GALLIGAN – Joyce G. Galligan, age 81, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Freeland, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born January 6, 1939 to Andrew and Cecilia (Lautner) Andres in Acme, Michigan. On August 24, 1957 she married William “Bill” Galligan at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. Joyce is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bill; her three children, Debbie (Gregg) Baldwin, Bill (Julie) Galligan, and Tammy (Patrick) Chartier; nine grandchildren Brandy (Baldwin) Gilbert, Rikki (Baldwin) Griffin, Glenn Baldwin, Billy Galligan, Katie (Galligan) Neuerburg, Nichole (Galligan) Jones, Alyssa Chartier, Jason Chartier, and Erica Chartier; as well as nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Raymond Andres; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, LaVern Andres; her sister, Gladys Kalchick. She was raised in Acme and spent the majority of her adult life in Freeland. In 2019 she moved to Grand Rapids to be closer to family. During her lifetime, she worked various part time jobs before finding her niche in the banking industry. Joyce started out as a teller and worked her way up to Branch Manager. She thoroughly enjoyed her job and took great pride in serving her customers' banking needs. Joyce was a “master gardener” with a passion for making her gardens absolutely beautiful and loved showing them off. This was evident when she won first prize in the 2005 Freeland Chamber of Commerce “Garden Walk”. When she wasn't tending her garden, she was with her sewing club making and creating quilts, clothes, and unique sewing projects for family and friends far and wide. Her greatest love, however, was the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether it was teaching them how to sew or tend to the garden or simply playing games, she thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent with them. Joyce will be missed for her contagious laugh, creative sewing talent, beautiful gardens, strong faith, and her love for life. Love you Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Friend. Due to the current restrictions related to COVID-19 concerning social distancing, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Rapids followed by a private graveside service at Blythefield Memorial Gardens with Father George Darling officiating. In Joyce's memory, please consider donations to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Holland.
