Obituary

Calvin David Murdock, age 84, passed away at his home on Monday, September 18, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Marie Murdock; son, David Murdock; sister, Sharon Levy. Calvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Sandra; children, Cara Lea Murdock, Chad Damon (Mischell) Murdock; daughter-in-law, Andrea Murdock; grandchildren, Jordan (Clara) Murdock, Jacob Murdock, Caelin Murdock, Camryn (Sam) Awad, Jenna Murdock; great grandchild, Brooklynne Murdock, and another on the way; brothers, Larry (Pam) Murdock, Jimmy (Cathy) Murdock; brother-in-law, Larry Levy; several nieces and nephews. Calvin spent most of his childhood in Concord where he met the love of his life, Sandra. They moved to Big Rapids shortly after their wedding in 1961 so Cal could continue his education at Ferris Institute. Following graduation in 1963, he worked for a CPA firm for two years. He then got a job at Consumers Power where he worked for 10 years for the president and chairman of the board at headquarters. In 1975, two days before the new year, he and Sandie moved with their three young children from Concord into the farmhouse in Walker. A true businessman at heart, it was at that time that Calvin co-founded/co-owned GinSan - they owned several self-service carwashes. When Cal and his partner couldn't find quality equipment for their carwashes, they decided to begin manufacturing carwash parts. Next, in 1991, he started working at SF Supply, eventually becoming president of the company from 1992-2010. He continued working at SF as a board member following his retirement. Calvin was a founding board member of Mercantile Bank which started in 1997. He was the primary culture ambassador at Merc. For several years, he had a food trailer and could be found grilling for the new branch openings and trainings. He participated on the board until he was 76 years old. His hobbies over the years included fishing in Canada with his family and friends, hunting, playing cards with the card guys, taking road trips with the Rod Squad, going to the casino, keeping a pristine lawn, and enjoying many desserts - especially before eating dinner. In 2001, Cal and Sandie built a home in Sparta. Calvin's true joy was spending time with his family. He was happiest with a houseful of family and friends. He adored his grandchildren and their friends and looked forward to their visits. A celebration of Calvin's life will take place on Saturday, September 23, at Orchard Hill Church, 1465 3 Mile Road in Grand Rapids, MI 49544. There will be a time of visitation with the family from 10:00AM until 12:00PM. The memorial service will begin at noon with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Calvin's memory to St. Paul's Anglican Catholic Church, 2560 Lake Michigan Dr NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534. Service Details.
