Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Daniel Joseph Brechting, age 91, of Rockford, Michigan. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family, after a 16 year battle of cancer on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. He was born March 12, 1935, in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late August and Nina (Antor) Brechting. Dan graduated from Catholic Central High School with the class of 1953. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Dan married the love of his life, Judith Kay Alcumbrack on February 5, 1966, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MI.

He worked nearly 35 years as a millwright for General Motors until his retirement in 1999. Even after his retirement he worked part time for 13 years at Maintech. Dan was an amazing family man and loved all of our family gatherings especially when a “Family Cornhole Tournament” was the main event. He was great at taking things apart, tinkering with cars and fixing engines. He enjoyed going to auctions, especially when he thought he might find a good deal on tools or something from a farm. Every month he looked forward to going to breakfast with his “GM Breakfast Bunch”. He was always willing to tell you a story about one of his favorite vacations, children, grandchildren or great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Judy; five children, Beth (Jim) Perry, Denice (Scott) Hubbard, Phil (Seresa Gunst) Brechting, Colleen (Mark) Mandreky, and Matthew (Laurie) Brechting; 12 grandchildren, Justin (Mary) Perry, Brittany (fiance, David Horak) Perry, Lucas , Jacob (Maureen), and Carly Hubbard, Nina (fiance, Christian Raven) Mandreky, Eliza, Krista, and Nathaniel Mandreky, and Jordan, Caitlin, and Ashton Brechting; 2 great-granddaughters, Autumn and Grace Perry; sister-in-law, Muriel Crow; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bernard (Florence) Brechting, Dorothy (Pete) Jalowiecz, Margaret (Jay) White, Catherine (Don) Steiner; Arlene (Ken) Klein; parents-in-law, Maurice and Elizabeth (Baldwin) Alcumbrack; and brother-in-law, Larry Crow.

Visitation will take place on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue NW, Comstock Park, MI 49321, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 6390 Belmont Ave NE, Belmont, MI 49306, with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with Rev. Daniel Orris Jr. officiating. Military Honors will be rendered by the United States Army and Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Dan will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Belmont.

Thank you to our parish family who have prayed and supported us through these tough times.
