THOME- Gerald Karl Thome, age 94, of Alpine Township, went to be with the Lord on December 22, 2019, with his family at his side. Gerry, as he was known by family and friends, was born June 2, 1925, to Charles and Lana Thome in Comstock Park, Michigan. Gerry will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty; daughters Denise (Glenn) Phelps, Lee Thome, Kris (Dave) Woroniecki, Kim (Ken) Stoepker; grandchildren Aaron Phelps, Erica Fohring, Eric Gall, Brandon Gall, Jessyca Stoepker, Kendra Stoepker, and 7 great-grandchildren. After graduating from Comstock Park High School, he joined the Army and served 2 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As an engineer, Gerry helped build the Ledo Road over the mountains in the India Burma Zone. After returning from the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Bessie (Betty) Brenner and they have celebrated 73-1/2 years together. Gerry spent several years building their home adjacent to the family farm where he helped out for many years. Gerry owned and operated his own excavating business for a time. He also worked at Kelvinator for 7 years and retired as a packaging engineer from General Motors after 30 years. Gerry and Betty made many happy memories with their children at their cottage on Crystal Lake in Shelby that they built together. Gerry was a longtime and devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, serving as an usher and helping with Bingo for many years. He was a member of the Casino Club for more than 50 years, and helped to set up tables for Lenten fish fries. Fishing was a great pastime for him; he especially enjoyed fishing trips to Canada for walleye. After retiring, Gerry dedicated many hours working with the Michigan Quarter Horse Association and developed longstanding relationships with many wonderful people. The family will receive family and friends at the Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue NW, Comstock Park on Thursday, December 26, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1200 Alpine Church Road, Comstock Park, with Fr. Thomas G. Simons officiating, under the auspice of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.
