Harold John Thome, 93, of Comstock Park, was called “home to rest” on Monday, March 2, 2026.
On March 23, 1932, he was born to Bert and Irene Thome during a 3 day snow storm, something he was proud of. Harold met JoAnn Barman, a city girl from the westside, and were married on February 27, 1960, and they were blessed with 66 years of marriage. Harold was preceded in death by his brother Mark.
Harold was a 4th generation apple grower, where he and JoAnn worked as a team committed to helping improve the industry. This was evident when being honored with “Apple Grower of the Year” from The American Fruit Grower, “Man of the Year” from Michigan State Pomesters, and President of the Michigan State Horticultural Society. Harold was a devout Catholic and was an Usher at Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he was a lifetime member.
Harold enjoyed antique tractors and was a member of the Greasy Fingers Antique Tractor Club. He loved participating in the annual Mackinac Bridge Tractor Crossing and did so for 15 years. He also enjoyed polka dancing, napping at the family cottage, his many leisurely rides roaming “the Ridge” admiring all the apple orchards, and inspecting community development. He was a happy man with an unwavering faith, an infectious smile and a joyful spirit. He will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Harold is survived by: his wife, JoAnn; children, Dennis (Leah) Thome, Steve (Missy) Thome, Patty (John) Woodhouse, Jeanne (Joe) Wahlfield; grandchildren, Sarah, Marissa, Megan (Mark), Mitch, Jill, Colleen, Brie (Josh), and Darren; great-grandchildren, Meredith, Marleigh, Macklyn, and Elise. In addition Harold was a “Deere” friend to many. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for Harold’s caregivers including Dawn Robinson and the staff at Boulder Creek and Corso Care Hospice for their compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 1200 Alpine Church Rd NW, Comstock Park. Visitation will be held on Thursday March 5 from 4:00-7:00 PM with the rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM at Beuschel Funeral Home 5018 Alpine Avenue Comstock Park. Visitation will also take place an hour prior to the start of the Mass at church. Interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
