Obituary

CORDES, JAMES J. "JIM", age 86, of Alpine Township, went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mary Cordes; infant children, Joseph and Theresa; brothers, Joseph Cordes and Clarence "Louie" Cordes; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, William Hathaway, Joseph and Theresa Yob and Gordon Balcom. He will be greatly missed and remembered by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Jane; children, James M. (Cindy) Cordes, Kathleen (John) Treml, Steven (Karen) Cordes, Mary (Rob) Burden and Charles (Stephanie) Cordes; grandchildren, Michael Cordes, Nichole Cordes, Amber (Eddie) Powell, Amanda Cordes, Sarah Cordes, Matthew Cordes, Rosemarie (Matthew) Schultz, Andrew (Tisha) Janssen, Jesse (Laura) Janssen, Dayna (Seth) Timmer, KaSandra Cordes, Lloyd Burden, Mariah Cordes, Charles J. Cordes, Audrianna Cordes and Anthony J. Cordes; great-grandchildren, Dominic Cordes, Kierra Powell, Danielle Hurt, Destiny Hurt, Marilyn Ider, Emilia Cordes, Adrienne Cordes, Gianna Cordes, Tyler Janssen, Kaytlyn Janssen, Avery Janssen, Quinn Janssen, Brody Timmer, Dallas Timmer and Athena Cordes; sisters, Mary Ellen Hathaway and Sr. Eileen M. Cordes RSM; sisters-in-law, Jaynie Cordes, Carol Cordes, Lucille Balcom and Adele (Dick) Elenbaas; brother-in-law, Charlie (Jackie) Yob; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Jim was a life long active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. As a child he attended school at Holy Trinity and was an altar server, as an adult he was an usher for over 50 years. In high school he dreamed of becoming an airplane pilot and in the early 1970's achieved his dream and received his pilot license. He met the love of his life when he dropped his sister off for 4-H at Holy Trinity Catholic School, where Mary Jane Yob was teaching in 1950. Jim was drafted and served his country during the Korean War. He founded Kent FWD Truck Sales in 1967 which later evolved into Cordes Inc. (Trucking). Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 15548, American Legion - Neal E. Fonger Post 179 and the Horseless Carriage Club, which he served as treasurer for the club. He enjoyed antique cars of many makes and models eventually having his own car museum, which he relished until the Lord called him home. Family and friends will be greeted at the Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue N.W., Comstock Park on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday, May 2, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., a Rosary Service at 4:00 P.M. with Deacon Jerry Roersma. The Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and honor Jim's life will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11:00 A.M., with visitation one hour prior, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1200 Alpine Church Road, Comstock Park, with Rev. Fr. Thomas G. Simons and Rev. Fr. Paul Milanowski officiating, and under the Auspice of Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.
