Obituary

Keighly Adam "Keek" Karel, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on July 27, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His sudden passing has left a deep ache in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his spirit continues to shine brightly in the lives he touched.

Born on February 11, 1961, Keighly was a man of humor, heart, and curiosity. Known affectionately as "Keek." His laughter was contagious, his stories unforgettable, and his presence comforting. He had a natural gift for finding beauty and joy in everyday life.

Keighly proudly served his country in the United States Navy for three years, including time overseas while stationed in Lebanon. Following his time in the Navy, Keighly worked as a spindle maker for many years. His craftsmanship and work ethic were evident in all he did.

Keighly had a deep love for the outdoors and found peace and inspiration in nature. He enjoyed hiking trails and camping beneath the stars. He was also a talented artist, with a creative mind that found expression in sketching, journaling, and an appreciation for art in all its forms. A lover of anthropology, history and books, Keighly was endlessly curious — always eager to learn, explore, and understand the world around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Clara Karel; his brother and best friend, Evan Karel; and his sister, Beverly Karel.

He is survived by his brother, Donald Leigh Karel; sister-in-law, Terri Karel; nieces Kelli Ann (Cj Colter) and Katelin Clair (Tyler Scott); nephew Nathaniel Evan; great-nephew Andrew Karel; and great-nieces Layla, Mila, and Laynie Scott. Keighly's deep love for his family was evident in every conversation, every shared laugh, and every small act of kindness. His family was his heart, and his memory will continue to live on through them.

A private burial service with military honors was held with immediate family at Pine Grove Cemetery on October 23, 2025.

Rest in peace, Keighly Adam "Keek" Karel — forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
