IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Philip Austin
Makinen
August 19, 1928 – August 29, 2025
Philip A. Makinen of Grand Rapids, MI passed away peacefully at home on August 29, 2025 with his family by his side. Phil was able to celebrate his 97th birthday surrounded by friends and family. Phil is now re-united with Joyce, his wife of 55 years. He leaves behind his son, Leo; Leo's fiancée, Rebecca; grandson, Tyler; sister, Audrey; and many nieces and nephews on the Makinen and Spinner sides of his family.
Phil was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. After the war he attended Central Michigan University using the G.I. bill. Phil was a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. One of his favorite endeavors was attending games at Major League Baseball stadiums across the country with his son. He loved his Heritage Hill neighborhood. He also worked then volunteered for the Grand Rapids Public Museum for 45 years – most of those years after retiring from a full time job at Detroit Ball Bearing. Phil volunteered religiously every Wednesday morning until March of 2025. Phil enjoyed attending sessions of the Civil War round table, the Jazz Society and the Grand Rapids Historical Society. He also enjoyed attending West Michigan Whitecaps games. He worked out with his son at the gym six days a week. Phil touched many lives in his 97 years and was a friend to all. There are so many among us who have considered themselves fortunate to have known and been friends with Phil. In keeping with Phil's and the family's wishes, cremation has taken place.
