Obituary

Russell Austin Thayer, age 87, of Casnovia, Michigan, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. He was born April 27, 1939, in Bellaire, Michigan to the late Harold and Eileen (Roberts) Thayer. Russ graduated from Sparta High School with the class of 1957, and then proudly served in the United States Air Force until 1961.

In 1963, Russ married the love of his life Elaine Marie Stockhill. Together the couple raised their two children and celebrated over 60 years of marriage before Elaine passed away in 2023. Russ was a proud union iron worker for over 30 years. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing cards, and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Russ is survived by his son, Jim Thayer; daughter, Nancy (Mark) Thompson; grandchildren, Cody (Morgan) Thayer, Katie (Daniel) Greene, Zack (Taylor) Thayer, Alexandra (Michael) Hancock, Austin (Margaret) Thompson, and Randy (Blaire) Thompson; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Les (Arlene) Thayer; sister, Marlene “Marti” Steffens; sister-in-law, Deb Thayer; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; his parents; brother, Keith Thayer; and sister, Sandra Thayer.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10:00 am until Noon at Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue NW, Comstock Park, MI, 49321, with the funeral service at Noon. Burial will be at South Casnovia Cemetery with Elaine.
