Sean Frederick Hartzell, 36, born September 1, 1986. Son, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Dear friend to all, died peacefully June 23, 2023 in his home surrounded by loved ones. He was diagnosed with a Sarcoma - Desmo Plastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT), a rare aggressive form of cancer in October of 2017. For the next 5 and a half years, Sean lived to the fullest while battling this disease. Sean grew up in Kent City, Michigan graduating from the local high school in 2004. He graduated from Central Michigan University in 2010 with a degree in Finance. He also served as President of his fraternity - Alpha Kappa Psi. At 16 he began his career at SpartanNash as a bag boy at D&W. He climbed the corporate ladder to become a Category Manager. He loved working for SpartanNash and especially his wonderful co-workers. Sean was very grateful to SpartanNash and his work family for the support and love they showed him with throughout his cancer journey. Sean also loved his care teams, at MD Anderson in Houston TX, UofM in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Lacks Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He made friends with all his care givers and he was so deeply grateful for them. Sean's passions included travel, food, family, and friends. An avid traveler he took every opportunity to jump on a plane or hop on a cruise ship and just go. Sean's real and abiding passion was his family and friends. Sean instilled a zest for life and commitment to family and friends with the power of a smile. He had a wicked sense of humor - His advice would be "Don't ignore your symptom's, and don't self-diagnose! Get to the doctor."
Sean is survived by his parents, Larry Sr. and Shelly Hartzell; brother, Larry Jr. (Rachael) Hartzell; sister, Brenna (Eric) Mitchell; nieces and nephews, Alexis, Alyssa, Caden, Cailynn Hartzell, Maddyson and Lucas Mitchell; grandparents, Sharon and Harold Lake; Helen Bannen; aunts, Brenda Trussell, Stephanie (Ray) Munson, Cheryl (Ernie) Whitmore, Peggy (Carl) Danner; many cousins, extended family, and friends. Sean was preceded in death by his baby sister, Bobbie Jo Hartzell; grandparents, Bill Trussell Jr., Les Hartzell, Margaret Barnes; uncles, Terry Hartzell, Bill Trussell III; aunt, Stephanie Amaya. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023 1:00 PM at the Mamrelund Community Center, 4085 Lutheran Church Rd. NW, Kent City, MI 49330.
