MAGUIRE - Thomas J. Maguire, age 71, of Kentwood, passed into the arms of Jesus, on Thursday, July 17, 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan after sharing precious goodbyes, with his beloved wife, sister, daughters and grandchildren. Tom was born on November 9, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to Melanie (Vier) and John Maguire. He was the fourth of six siblings; M. Joan Maguire, John Maguire, Larry Maguire, Ann (Pat) Walsh Quinn and Joe Maguire (Mark Pomerenke). On February 4, 1967 he married the love of his life, Janet L. Ruelle of Farmington, Michigan at Gesu Church in Detroit. Tom was a 1960 graduate of Assumption High School in Windsor, Ontario Canada. He also attended U of D and was a member of the Precious Blood Parish. He served in the United States Air Force from 1960 until his retirement in 1983 with the rank of Msgt., where he earned multiple valor awards. After his honorable discharge, he graduated from Ferris State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Tom retired from the United States Post Office in 2004. He was a member of the American Legion; a mentor at Mary Freebed Hospital's stroke support group; and greatly enjoyed playing softball and golf. Tom, along with Jan, enjoyed spending the past few years as "snowbirds" at Lake Region Village in Haines City, Florida. Cherished memories of Tom will be kept by his loving, devoted wife, Jan and their children, Holly (David) Shay Rotter, Brian Maguire, Kathleen Maguire Hill, and Theresa (Andy) Maguire Shehorn; his greatest treasures, grandchildren, Thomas, Allison and Michael Shehorn, Daniel and Mitchell Rotter, and Marion Hill. . . already miss him terribly. Tom also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws along with 25 exchange students from throughout the world, who know him as "Grandpa Tom". Tom was preceded in death by his parents; step father, James McAleer; brother in-law and dear friend, James Walsh and lifelong friend, Michael C. Prendeville. Keeping with his wishes, Tom has been cremated and his beautiful Irish eyes have been donated to the Michigan Eye Bank. The family will receive family and friends at the Beuschel Funeral Home, 5018 Alpine Avenue, Comstock Park on Friday, July 25, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m., with a Memorial Service following at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Father Rock J. Badgerow, as celebrant and under the Auspice of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. The family welcomes everyone who did not get to say goodbye and would like to share loving memories. In honor of Tom, contributions may be made to the Hospice of your choice.
